How is synthetic grass made?

Synthetic grasses are made from recycled plastic. The plastic is produced through a process called extrusion. This process uses heat and pressure to create the fibers and bind the synthetic fibers together to resemble real grass and look like the actual grass. After numerous trials and the use of the test fields for several years, a synthetic grass product was finally completed. 

Synthetic grass does not need the same maintenance and is highly resistant to breakage. This makes it an ideal lawn option as you will never have to mow, seed, fertilize or weed your lawn again. The plastics will have UV stabilizers and additives in them so that they are resistant to the sun’s UV rays and will not fade or break down over time. The process of extrusion is used to make the fibers you see in the grass blades. This is done by pushing molten plastic through a steel plate, which will then carry the strands through water and into a pully system.

The pulley system will wind these strands into spools.  They will have various color combinations to mimic the look of real grass. These strands will be fed to what they call a stuffing machine, which is basically like a large sewing machine with up to 200 needles. It will sew the thread to the synthetic turf’s backing.  

Once the blades are sewn to the backing, hot needles will go through the backing to ensure there are proper drain holes. The turf will endure many different types of inspection, including some trimming before leaving the plant.  

Often, the turf is tested with football-style cleats to ensure that it is as durable as one would hope. This step is a part of quality control.
