That exchange, and the long thread of landscapers weighing in underneath it, points to something worth saying plainly — a properly installed artificial lawn lies flat from day one. It does not need weeks to "relax" into place. If you’re standing in your yard looking at waves, soft spots, or seams you can see with your eyes closed, the problem isn’t the turf. It’s what’s underneath it, or how it was seamed and secured.

Where the Bumps Actually Come From
Artificial turf is a thin, flexible surface. It has no structural rigidity of its own — it simply reflects whatever is beneath it. If a crew rolls turf out over uneven native soil, old sod remnants, or a base that wasn’t compacted, every low spot, root ball, and soft patch will telegraph straight through as a ripple or dip. Heat can make it worse temporarily, since the backing expands slightly in direct sun, but heat does not create structural waves on a correctly built base. It just makes an already-poor base more obvious.

That base is doing the job your natural soil used to do — supporting weight evenly and letting water pass through instead of pooling. What to Look For, Panel by Panel
Walk the lawn slowly, ideally at midday when the surface is warm and any slack should have relaxed out naturally.
Grading and base. The surface should follow one continuous, gentle plane with no dips near sprinkler heads, edging, or drain areas. Press down with your foot in a few spots — it should feel firm and consistent, not soft or springy in one section and hard in another. Inconsistent firmness usually means inconsistent compaction underneath.
Seams. Two pieces of turf meeting should be nearly invisible when viewed from a few feet away. You should not be able to lift a seam edge with your fingers, and the blade direction should match across the seam so it doesn’t create a visible stripe or shadow line.
Fasteners and edges. Nails or staples along the perimeter should sit flush, not proud, and edges against pavers, pool decking, or garden beds should be trimmed cleanly rather than tucked or forced. This is also where we check that irrigation lines running into the turf area have been properly capped, not left live under the surface — a detail that gets missed when a crew is rushing.
Drainage response. After a rain, water should disappear through the base within a few minutes rather than sitting on top or pooling near low points. Standing water is one of the clearest signs the base wasn’t built to shed it, and in a pet-heavy yard, that same poor drainage is usually what turns into lingering odor over time.
Denver Conditions That Change the Standard
Our freeze-thaw cycles move soil in ways that flatter climates don’t have to plan for. A base that isn’t compacted deeply enough can shift slightly over winter and telegraph as a new ridge the following spring — which is one reason base preparation gets treated as non-negotiable rather than optional. UV-stabilized fiber matters here too, since Front Range sun and hail are harder on synthetic fibers than shade-heavy regions; fading or brittleness after a summer or two usually traces back to lower-grade material, not installation technique. Settling In vs. Calling the Contractor Back
There’s a real distinction between a lawn that needs a light brushing after installation — turf is low maintenance, not zero maintenance, and an occasional rinse or brush against the grain is normal upkeep — and a lawn with structural ridges that a broom won’t fix. A quick way to tell them apart: light matting from foot traffic or fiber lay-direction will respond to brushing within a single pass. A true base problem won’t move at all, or it will bounce back within days.
