What is Astroturf?
Astroturf is an artificial grass pitch designed to replicate natural grass and help players practice or play on surfaces that are not accessible year-round. It is a great way to get some exercise in the off-season when natural grass pitches are prone to flooding, freezing, or just getting muddy.
Astroturf is the name of an American Company that first produced artificial grass. Since they were the first company it became the trademarked brand name for an artificial surface that looks like grass. That is, sometimes, Artificial grasses are generally referred to as Astroturf.
The early production of Astroturf was made from crumb rubber, which is made from scrap tires. This was a good solution for under-resourced cities, but the risk of tracking tire dust into the stadium led to bans and health concerns. The crumb rubber was replaced with ‘synthetic infill’, made from sand or polymer pellets. This synthetic turf is currently the most common type used in athletic fields.

Astroturf Installation in Austin
Every homeowner desires a beautiful landscape and lawn environment and one of the ways to achieve this is through artificial grass. Most homeowners choose the installation of Astroturf over natural grass because of the many advantages it has in the yard, balcony, terrace
Astroturf in your yard
In Austin, the yard is where you see artificial grass the most. If you don’t have “green fingers” or simply don’t have the time to maintain your lawn, artificial grass is the answer. The big advantage of Astroturf Austin in your outdoor space is that it offers you a lot of conveniences.
Austin has a damp subtropical climate. Hence, it has lengthy, very warm summers and typically favorable winters. So, you can enjoy the beautiful weather from your lazy (yard) chair during the warm summer days. No more mowing, spraying, and fertilizing
Nowadays, artificial turf has developed so much that you can’t even easily distinguish it from a natural lawn. The grass retains its beautiful appearance for years, without you having to do anything for it.
No worries. Here too you can lay a layer of astroturf in no time. The surface of most balconies is often flat and has concrete or tiles as a surface. You simply roll out the grass over the surface in one go and simply cut it to the length and width.
This way you can transform your balcony into a cozy space with a real outdoor feeling. Keep in mind the water drainage, so that the moisture does not remain under the artificial grass and the whole becomes soaked.
Create your own lawn on the rooftop
You can install astroturf on your rooftop to get the feeling of a real lawn and you can enjoy the beautiful grass all year round. Artificial grass on the rooftop is easy to lay and requires almost no maintenance. You can check out our work at Upstairs at Caroline outdoor space that we installed artificial turf on. However, laying artificial turf on the rooftop is not entirely the same as landscape turf installation. You have to take into account the surface and the water drainage. The substrate can be the current roof, but you can also lay concrete tiles first. Before installing synthetic grass, you should thoroughly clean the surface. It must also be flat, so you create a stable surface where water can drain under it.
Astroturf as decoration
Artificial grass does not only have to offer a functional and practical value, it can also be used for decoration. Interior designers in Austin are increasingly working with astroturf these days. Because it looks natural and does not require any care. It is very possible to cover walls and furniture with synthetic turf. Hence, astroturf is not only suitable for outdoor use, but also indoor use.
Astroturf for sports and games
Let children play on a field that is fall-proof, never muddy, and unbreakable. At Waterloo Turf, we design and realize the most sustainable applications for sports and games. We can handle astroturf installation projects for schools, daycare centers, and even public spaces.
Astroturf can take a beating, which is ideal for sports fields, as a surface for playground equipment, or as a play hill.
Astroturf installation process
Remove old soil
For the best results, you want your artificial grass to be level with the surrounding terrain. This often means that the old soil has to be excavated or removed. Sometimes artificial turf is placed on top of tiles, but we always recommend removing it. Our astroturf installation service will remove the old substrate and, if necessary, excavate a piece.
Raising with sand
After the subsoil has been excavated, the artificial grass layer will raise it with sand. This ensures that the surface remains nicely even during the life of the grass and there is less chance of potholes under the grass carpet. The layer usually uses street sand for this. By applying this layer of sand you are assured of a good surface for your artificial turf.
Create an even surface
After sufficient sand has been applied to the substrate, it is vibrated and smoothed with a vibrating plate. After this, the sand bed is completely leveled and extremely firm. Because the bottom is compacted, it will remain flat for a long time and you can enjoy your beautiful artificial grass for an extra-long time.
Laying the artificial grass
Now the pressure distribution cloth and the astroturf can be laid. The layer will place the rolls of pressure distribution cloth and artificial grass on one side of the field and roll them out. When there is an irregular shape or obstacles, the layer will cut these out with a special artificial grass knife. If several rolls are installed, they can be attached with adhesive tape.
Finally, the artificial grass is anchored to the ground with artificial grass pegs. These are placed along every meter of the perimeter.
