The Artificial Grass Installation Checklist to Walk Before You Sign the Final Invoice

The Moment to Do This Walkthrough (and Why It’s Before, Not After, Payment)

A thread that circulated on r/landscaping showed a homeowner’s finished artificial turf with visible seam ridges and uneven color running across the yard, installed by a contractor who’d already been paid in full. That’s the timing problem with turf installs: most of what determines whether the lawn looks right in six months is invisible once the grass is down. By the time a seam lifts in July heat or a low spot holds water after a storm, the crew is gone and the invoice is closed.

The fix isn’t complicated, but it does require walking the yard with intent before you release final payment, not after you’ve admired it from the porch for a week. Below is what to physically check, in the order it matters.

Grading and Base: What’s Actually Under the Turf

You can’t see the base once turf is installed, so this is the one section where you have to trust documentation over appearance, or ask before the turf goes down. At Waterloo Turf, base preparation is treated as non-negotiable: the soil gets excavated and replaced with a compacted crushed stone or decomposed granite base built to mimic natural drainage. Turf laid directly onto existing dirt is not something we install, because that base is what prevents wrinkling, shifting, and standing water later.

If you’re inspecting someone else’s completed work, ask for a photo of the excavated base before it was covered. No photo, no way to verify. That’s a fair thing to ask for before final payment, not an unreasonable one.

Seams: Where Most Visible Problems Start

Run your hand flat across every seam line. You’re feeling for two things: a ridge (the seam is peaking, usually from tension or poor adhesive bonding) and a gap (blades on either side don’t match direction or density, creating a visible line). Kneel down at a couple of seams and sight along the blade direction: the grain should run the same way across the full seam, not fight itself.

Seams near high-traffic paths, gates, and dog runs are worth extra attention, since they’ll see the most flexing and the most feet.

Edges Along Beds, Pool Decking, and Hardscape

Edges are where turf meets something else (planting beds, pool coping, a patio slab) and they’re a common spot for corners to work loose over a season of temperature swings. Press down on the perimeter every few feet. It should sit flush without lifting or a visible gap underneath.

This matters more in yards with existing landscaping or a pool, where the crew has to work drainage and fastening around features that were already there rather than a blank lot. If you have a pool deck or established beds you want protected, that’s a detail worth raising with any installer before work starts, not something to discover after.

The Drainage Test You Can Run With a Garden Hose

This is the single most useful test for pet owners and anyone worried about odor: pour a few gallons of water on a section of turf and watch where it goes. It should disappear through the backing within a minute or two, not pool on the surface or run off to one low corner. Standing water is usually a grading issue underneath, not a turf problem, which is why the base work earlier in this list matters so much.

If you have dogs, do this test in the area they use most. Turf backing that drains properly is part of what keeps pet odor from becoming a permanent issue rather than an occasional rinse-and-brush chore, because low maintenance still means occasional maintenance, not none.

Pile Direction and Glare

Stand at the point in your yard where you’ll actually view the lawn most (from a back window, a patio chair, wherever that is) and look at how the light hits the blades. Turf laid with pile direction facing the wrong way for your main sightline can look flat, patchy, or a different shade than it should, even with identical material.

If your yard has large low-e windows nearby, ask whether that was factored into placement. Reflected light off certain window coatings can concentrate heat on a section of turf, and it’s a detail worth assessing at the planning stage rather than noticing later.

Irrigation: Capped, Not Just Covered Over

If the yard had a working sprinkler system before turf went in, check whether those lines were actually capped off, not just buried under the new surface. An irrigation line left live under turf keeps running your water bill for a lawn that no longer needs it, and it can create hidden wet spots. Capping those lines is a standard part of the Waterloo Turf Way for exactly that reason: there’s no point installing a lawn that saves water if the old system is still quietly running underneath it.

FAQs About Post-Install Inspections in Decatur

Will my HOA have an issue with turf that’s already installed? HOA rules vary by neighborhood and are worth confirming before installation, not after: some associations have specific requirements on pile height, color, or visible seams that are easier to plan for up front than to retrofit.

Can heat damage cause fading I’d notice right away? UV-stabilized materials are built to resist fading in hot climates over years, not weeks, so early fading right after install usually points to a material or manufacturing issue worth flagging immediately rather than something that will improve.

Is a little bit of unevenness normal right after installation? Minor settling can happen in the first few weeks as base material compacts further under weather and foot traffic. Persistent ridges at seams or standing water after that window are worth addressing, not waiting out.

Next Step

If you’re mid-install with a contractor and something on this list doesn’t check out, raise it before the final invoice is settled. It’s a much easier conversation before payment than after. If you’re still comparing installers for a Decatur yard, Waterloo Turf Atlanta can walk you through base prep, drainage planning, and irrigation capping for your specific yard before any turf is ordered.
