- Smoothness — stand at the edge of the lawn and shoot down the length of it at a low angle, almost parallel to the ground. Waves and dips show up far more clearly at this angle than from directly overhead.
- Seams — kneel and photograph every seam line closely enough to see individual blades. A well-installed seam should be tight, with matching grain direction and no visible gap or fraying tape underneath.
- Grading — photograph where the turf meets hardscaping: pool decking, patios, downspouts. The turf should slope slightly away from the house and toward an intended drainage path, not pool against a foundation or deck edge.
- Drainage — after the next real rain, photograph any standing water 30–60 minutes later. Properly installed turf over a compacted stone base should show damp ground, not puddles.
